The Whole Roll Tips --- How to take great pictures

How can I improve the quality of my images and pictures?

There are many simple ways to improve the quality of your own digital images that apply to regular photography as well.
  • The first step is to use a good quality film or digital camera.
  • Always make sure your film is fresh or that the xD, SD, Compact Flash or other media you use is capable of storing the images you intend to gather.
  • Always make sure the camera batteries are new or fully charged.
  • Fill the viewfinder frame with the subject you are shooting. High resolution images can be cropped to show only the section you want, but the bigger and clearer the initial image, the better the output will be for viewing.
  • After exposure, process all film as soon as possible to avoid degradation of image quality. In theory, digital images can wait forever to be processed. Burn them to CD or DVD media to assure they will always be available --- TWR recommends putting all copies of "before" and "after" images on CD's or DVD's for long term storage.
  • If using film, scan them at a resolution of at least 150 dpi if they will be printed; higher resolution is better but may create enormous files. If you have the storage space, go for the maximum possible resolution.
  • If your scanned (or digital) images wil be used online, reduce their size to 72 dpi. The web is a "lossy" place and higher resolution simply means images take too long to load properly. You can still resize them for the space where they will appear. Save them at 72 dpi at the size (?? pixels X ?? pixels) you need to use.
  • Once sized, they can be reduced (?? pixels X ?? pixels) in dimension without loss of image quality. Increasing their apparent size will result in poor images. It is better to create larger images than you may need and reduce them to fit the online space where they will be used.
There are lots more easy, no-cost or inexpensive ways to improve your images. We'll tell you about them in coming TWR Tips.
